In 1994, ICRISAT placed its germplasm collections under the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to ensure worldwide access. Under the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA), ICRISAT supplies germplasm through Standard Material Transfer Agreement (SMTA).
For the purposes of research, breeding, or training for food and agriculture, ICRISAT provides small quantities of germplasm samples free of charge to any individual or organization anywhere in the world. The SMTA is a standard agreement that outlines the terms and conditions under which plant genetic resources for food and agriculture are transferred from the provider to the recipient under the multilateral system of the ITPGRFA.
